MrOliver Simmons

I am a second year PhD student in the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology. My work focuses on using mathematical modelling and data analysis to better understand the malaria burden in Sub-Saharan Africa among children aged 5-15 years old, a historically neglected age group due to lower rates of symptomatic disease and death. My work also involves using mathematical modelling to investigate the effectiveness of interventions aimed at reducing the malaria burden in school-aged children, such as school-based bed-net distribution programmes and the intermittent preventative treatment of school-aged children (IPTsc). I am supervised by Dr. Patrick Walker, Professor Tom Churcher, Dr. Lucy Okell and Dr. Joseph Hicks. 

Whilst my work mainly focuses on malaria, I am also interested in the epidemiology of dengue virus, and have worked on the mathematical modelling of DENV transmission in Mexico with Dr. Ilaria Dorigatti as part of my Master's degree.

As well as my PhD work, I assist with teaching related to infectious disease modelling on the MSc Epidemiology and MPH programmes at Imperial College London as a graduate teaching assistant (GTA).
