BIO

Dr Onesmus Mwabonje is an Advanced Research Fellow at the Centre for Environmental Policy, with combined academic and industrial experience in the application of Life Cycle Assessment to biochemical and bioenergy supply chains across UK, EU, and East African policy contexts. He currently leads the Environmental Impact Assessment research component of a National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) project addressing major health challenges linked to environmental degradation in India, Indonesia, and Bangladesh. He also leads an Imperial – ARUA - funded project on incorporating African and Afro‑diasporic science fiction into research and STEM education, working with partners from the University of Nairobi and interdisciplinary collaborators across the UK, Kenya, and Uganda. Dr Mwabonje is a co‑investigator on the UKRI‑funded Moving IMPACT project, which develops integrated on integrated means to power, agriculture, clean cooking, and transport in rural Kenya, Rwanda, and Ghana, and serves as the Imperial lead for the Accelerating Student‑Led Innovation in Africa (ASLIA) project, co‑led with Strathmore University and supported by the British Council, aimed at strengthening student‑driven innovation and UK - Africa collaboration. Previously, he was Principal Investigator on a DESNZ (formerly BEIS) project assessing the environmental, economic, and climate benefits of increased adoption of bio‑based chemicals in the UK and led the UK PACT AGROcotton project exploring organic cotton production under agroforestry systems with marginalised communities in Brazil. He also served as Technical Lead for the BEIS 2050 International Calculator Programme, supporting the development of ODA country decarbonisation pathways, and as Co‑Investigator on the BESTER project focused on bioprocess development for the European bio‑based chemicals market. At Imperial, Dr Mwabonje leads the Network of Excellence in Sustainability through Life Cycle Approaches, and co‑leads the Energy Policy option of the Environmental Technology MSc and the Bioenergy module on the MSc in Sustainable Energy Futures programme.
