DrNadine Moustafa

Nadine is a research associate in the Chemical Engineering department and the Center for Environmental Policy. She specialises in systems modelling for carbon management and decarboniaation technologies, developing net-zero strategies including carbon accounting, policy and carbon markets. Her work integrates socio-economic and techno-economic aspects of various energy technologies, including carbon capture and storage from various applications, CO₂ removal from the atmosphere, nuclear power, and sustainable fuels. Nadine also serves as the program and policy officer at the Coalition for Negative Emissions, advancing negative emission technologies and related policies.

Nadine graduated MEng in Chemical Engineering with Business Management as a minor from the University of Birmingham. Her PhD research focused on the performance of aqueous-amine solvents for carbon capture from flue gases and similar streams. It ultimately facilitated the selection of improved solvent blends for more cost-effective and environmentally benign carbon capture processes. In detail, the project involved a fundamental study of the kinetics of carbon dioxide absorption and the interplay of chemical-reaction and mass-transfer rates in controlling the overall capture rate which, in turn, is a key driver for the process economics.
