BIO

Dr MacCarthy is the Department of Aeronautics’ Experimental Services and Wind Tunnel Manager. He has many years' experience managing the department’s unique research facilities and facilitating large laboratory infrastructure projects such as AMP, High Speed Flow Laboratories, Flight Arena Development Programme, the Flight Simulator laboratory and the Hydrodynamics laboratory.

With a background in applied hardware and software control for hydrodynamic research, he came to the department in 1999 from a research officer role at City University to lead commercial and research experimental activities in Road Vehicle Aerodynamics and has extensive experience running road and racing car testing programmes including those from F1, Indy and Sportscar series as well as many other wind tunnel based studies. He has trained and mentored a significant number of Imperial PhD students in the field of wind tunnel testing who now hold key Aerodynamic and managerial roles in F1 and related industries.

Dr MacCarthy completed a PhD in the department with sponsorship from a leading Formula 1 team and manages all of the departmental experimental test facilities leading a technical team of 19 who provide wind tunnel, Workshop, Electronic, Composite and Structures support to the department. He also holds responsibilities as the department’s Health and Safety officer and Laser Safety Officer.
