Michael Edwards is a Lecturer in Respiratory Medicine and Infections at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London.
Dr Edwards received his PhD in 2001 from the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia regarding IgE antibody expression and then joined Professor Sebastian Johnston's group at Imperial College London as a postdoctoral research associate.
In 2007, Dr Edwards obtained a Fellowship from Asthma UK investigating potential molecular mechanisms of deficient interferon responses in asthmatic bronchial epithelial cells, and was appointed to Non-Clinical Lecturer in Respiratory Medicine and Infections. Dr Edwards has attracted research funding from Asthma UK, British Lung Foundation, GlaxoSmithKline, and is co-author with Professor Sebastian Johnston on an MRC Project Grant.
His research interests also include pattern recognition in viral infection, signalling and transcriptional events leading to virus induced inflammatory molecules and interferon gene expression, and also the efficacy of corticosteroids in silencing neutrophil attracting chemokines from bronchial epithelial and airway smooth muscle cells.
Finally, Dr Edwards is a postgraduate tutor for NHLI and as such is a member of NHLI's Higher Degrees Committee.
