BIO
Martinique is a Specialist Registrar in Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery, based on the North West London rotation. She has an interest in arthroplasty and knee surgery.
She studied at Malta Medical School, University of Malta, completing her foundation programme in Glasgow and core surgical training in Oxford. In Oxford, she was selected as ‘Best Trainee of the Year (2017-2019)’. She was also voted as 'Best Tutor of the Year' for Year 4 and Year 6 medical students. She was the information analyst and helped co-ordinate a prestigious James Lind Alliance project for the Paediatric Lower Limb Surgery research group. At the start of her registrar training she sat on the trainee research committee for the British Association of Spine Surgery and won the EUROSPINE Research Course 2020 scholarship
She has developed an interest in knees, her PhD is focusing on optimising outcomes following patellofemoral joint replacements under the supervision of Mr A Liddle and Prof J Cobb for which she has won a research funding grant from Orthopaedic Research UK. She has also been awarded the British Association of Knee Surgeons Research Fellowship for 2023 and sits on the BASK Trainee Research Collaborative.
During her PhD, she was awarded other grants, including The International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS) Early Career Research Grant. These grants allowed her to organise a 10-year follow-up following a randomised control trial, which was an international collaboration between Denmark and Imperial College London. The trial looked at physical activity using wearables and portable gait technology.
She was awarded the Imperial College London Deans Internship Award and Imperial’s Global Seeds Fund. After receiving these awards, she visited Aix-Marseille Institut du mouvemet et de l'appareil locomoteur and published alongside Prof Ollivier and Prof Argenson. She also visited Professor Dejour at the Lyon School Of Knee Surgery.
She was awarded the Royal Society of Medicine Orthopaedic William Bodey Travelling Fellowship Award. She spent two months in Groote Schur under the supervision of Prof Held and Prof Laubscher. She was awarded the Sir Alex Simpson Smith Travelling Fellowship award, and she will embark on a travelling fellowship in 2025.
In her final year of her PhD, she was awarded the Department of Surgery & Cancer first prize 3-minute Thesis competition.
Aside from research, she has designed a training performance app for orthopaedic registrars called Bone Sheet which is available on the App store and is currently being used by her peers.
