DrMark McPhail

Mark McPhail is a Senior Lecturer and Consultant in Liver Critical Care in the Institute of Liver Studies, King's College London and Department of Hepatology at Imperial College. His main research interests are in outcome prediction and complications of liver failure. He is also working on novel methods to diagnose and monitor hepatic encephalopathy, renal dysfunction, sepsis and myopathy. He also holds a PhD in Molecular Physics from the University of Strathclyde. During his doctorate he collaborated with the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena and the University of Bologna on modelling rotation and vibration of atmospheric molecules involved in ozone depletion and global warming.
While retraining in medicine following his PhD he maintained an interest in teaching physics as an Associate Lecturer with the Open University. He continues to develop an interest in statistics and has published widely using multivariate methods. His present focus is on using metabolic profiling to improve diagnostics in his clinical interest topics and in widening understanding of medical statistics.
