Dr Maria Vinograd works in the Centre for Environmental Policy and co-convenes the "Environmental Resource Management Option" on the M.Sc. Environmental Technology.

I am interested in human-environment interactions and the complex systems which dictate resource use and environmental impact. My research interests are around how policy and society can enable the most efficient, lowest impact resource management methods and circular solutions. I also explore the the interface between weather and society, analysing how communities respond to extreme weather impacts and risk of environmental change.

Graduating from the M.Sc. Environmental Technology programme, I spent five years working in the waste management industry, developing projects and proposals for innovative waste treatment solutions in the UK. I authored a number of reports quantifying and projecting waste data and local and national levels to inform decision making on major infrastructure delivery. I also contributed to the development of EU resource and energy efficiency regulations.

My Ph.D. in Risk and Society from King's College London's Department of Geography looked at the concept of vulnerability to natural hazards and extreme weather events. Part of a NERC funded project with the MetOffice and university partners, my thesis project developed a database of extreme weather impacts and analysed the effectiveness of weather warnings.

In 2018 and 2019 I was a lead author of the World Energy Trilemma Index for the World Energy Council, comparing the relative strengths of national energy systems around the world. I also led risk and resilience research for the Council on extreme weather impact risk to energy systems.

Teaching Role

I work in the Centre for Environmental Policy on the M.Sc. Environmental Technology course.

I co-convene the Environmental Resource Management Option and I am part of the Urban Sustainable Environments options convenor team.
