Dr Marcus Yio is an Advanced Research Fellow and Facility Manager of the Centre for Infrastructure Materials Laboratory in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

He holds a BEng in Civil Engineering (First Class Honours) from the University of Sheffield, an MSc in General Structural Engineering (Distinction), and a PhD in Concrete Durability from Imperial College London. His doctoral research focused on the development of fluorescence laser scanning confocal microscopy techniques for three-dimensional and real-time imaging of cementitious materials. Following his PhD, Marcus worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Heriot-Watt University, where he developed sustainable building products using biopolymers and construction waste-derived materials.

His research interests focus on the multiscale characterisation, durability, and sustainability of cementitious materials, with particular emphasis on alternative low-carbon binder systems, including belitic, calcium sulfoaluminate/silicate and magnesium-based binders. His research also explores the application of machine learning and data-driven approaches to advanced characterisation and the fundamental understanding of cementitious systems, enabling improved prediction of material behaviour and accelerated development of sustainable materials.

As Facility Manager of the Centre for Infrastructure Materials Laboratory, Marcus oversees the operation and development of advanced materials characterisation capabilities, supporting research into the structure, processing, performance, and long-term durability of next-generation infrastructure materials.
