I am a Professor of Global Environmental Health at Imperial College London, the Academic Director of Imperial Global Ghana and the Director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre on NCD Surveillance, Epidemiology and Modelling. I also hold an adjunct Professorship at the Regional Institute for Population Studies at the University of Ghana. I am a Fellow of the UK Academy of Medical Sciences.

I studied Electrical and Computer engineering, followed by a PhD in Science, Technology and Environmental Policy. I now direct a research programme that integrates data and methodology from environmental, health and quantitative sciences to answer cutting-edge questions in public health and global health. For nearly three decades, we have conducted field studies on environment and health in countries in Africa and in China. Among others, we led the recently completed Pathways to Equitable Healthy Cities Study and currently lead the Climate Change Resilient Equitable Healthy Cities in Africa (CLARITY-Africa) Study, partnerships that aim to improve population health in cities around the world.

We also led the World Health Organization’s Comparative Risk Assessment Study, which was the first consistent global analysis of behavioural, environmental, nutritional, psychosocial, and metabolic risk factors and formed the scientific core of World Health Report 2002: Reducing Risks, Promoting Healthy Life. Our current research addresses trends and patterns in non-communicable diseases (NCDs) across the world, and includes the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC; www.ncdrisc.org) and NCD Countdown 2030, worldwide scientific collaborations that aim to strengthen the evidence for more effective NCD prevention and management.
