DrMuhammad Usman

Dr. Muhammad Usman is working as a Prinicipal Physicist at the Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Unit and Cardiovascular Research Centre at the Royal Brompton Hospital. He obtained his PhD in Medical Image Reconstruction at King's College London in January 2011. He has over 21 years of professional teaching and research experience including 16 years (13 years post PhD) in the field of medical imaging. His research interests include Medical Image Reconstruction, Biomedical Signal and Image Processing, Image Analysis, Machine Learning, Inverse Problems, Mathematical Modelling, Convex Optimization and Medical Physics. Specifically, he has worked on development of novel data acquisition, signal processing and image reconstruction algorithms for different applications in medical imaging. He has worked on complex challenging problems in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) including: 1) high spatio-temporal cardiac MRI from reduced scan time, 2) respiratory motion correction in cardiac MRI, 3) Machine learning aided automatic cardiac and respiratory gated MRI, and 4) geometric distortion and phase correction in prostate diffusion MRI. Dr. Usman has also written a number of successful grant applications and has gone on to help manage and supervise the research students and teams. 

Currently, at Royal Brompton Hospital, Dr. Usman is providing both clinical and research support for Cardiac MRI Unit pertaining the physics in MRI acquisition and reconstruction, image processing, machine learning, image and data analysis. Dr. Usman is providing valuable advice and guidance to the Cardiac MRI clinical and basic science research team. He is part of postgraduate teaching faculty on the twice yearly 3-month long cardiovascular MR imaging course run by the Cardiac MRI Unit. Dr. Usman is also active in project supervision.
