MrMikael Sodergren

Mikael Sodergren MBChB, DIC, PhD, FRCS is a Consultant Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic (HPB) Surgeon at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery & Technological Innovation at Imperial College London. He is a clinician-scientist whose work sits at the interface of surgery, machine learning and clinical data.

Clinically, he specialises in complex surgery of the pancreas, liver and biliary tract, including minimally invasive approaches. He has a consistent record of translating clinical and academic research into deployed medical technology: he pioneered natural orifice translumenal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) in the United Kingdom, holds an internationally patented surgical device, and has published widely on surgical human factors and medical eye-tracking.

His research applies machine learning to healthcare, a through-line that runs from his doctorate to the present day. His PhD at Imperial applied these methods to clinical problems, and he has developed the direction throughout his career. His current work builds and validates models for the prediction and prevention of avoidable inpatient harm, pairing large-scale, real-world clinical data with regulatory-grade evaluation to move predictive models beyond retrospective performance and into safe, prospective clinical use.

He established and leads the Imperial College Medical Cannabis Research Group - a research programme which evaluates and develops novel therapies targeting the endocannabinoid system through a framework of in vitro, in vivo and clinical translational activities. He has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and previously held the NIHR Academic Clinical Lectureship in Surgery at Imperial.
