Dr Matthew Siggins is a Principal Investigator and Assistant Professor in Immunity and Infection Biology at the University of Surrey, as well as an Honorary Fellow at Imperial College London.

His research integrates experimental infection models, advanced imaging, clinical datasets and explainable AI, focussing on three key areas: the impact of bacterial lymphatic dissemination on disease and immunity; how complex multivariable host responses can define disease mechanisms and reveal functional biomarkers; and harnessing lymphatic homing to improve vaccines for AMR.

Matthew's research has been supported by funding from UKRI (MRC and BBSRC), the British Society for Immunology, and NIHR. He pioneered the first bacterial-resolution intravital imaging of efferent lymphatic vessels (Nature Communications), transforming our understanding of how extracellular bacteria disseminate. He also led machine learning analyses of clinical COVID-19 datasets through the ISARIC and PHOSP consortia, producing the largest analysis of complement in infectious disease to date (Immunology, Science Immunology). His research has shaped clinical trial methodology and informed UK government policy through NERVTAG and SAGE.

Matthew received his PhD from the University of Birmingham and Novartis Global Health, and carried out postdoctoral research at Imperial College London with Professors Shiranee Sriskandan and Peter Openshaw before establishing independence as an NHLI Research Fellow.

Beyond research, he currently serves as a Trustee of the British Society for Immunology and an Associate Editor of Virulence. He is also a member of the UKRI Talent Peer Review College and an expert reviewer for international funders and leading journals including Science, The New England Journal of Medicine, and Nature Communications.
