MrMichael McTernan

Michael is the Director of the International Relations Office (IRO) at Imperial, where he works with a team of regional and programme experts to support the development and stewardship of global science and tech partnerships with peer universities, governments, and key international organisations.

With a strategic focus on fostering collaborations that enhance the university's global engagement and profile, the IRO is committed to advancing the institution's mission to educate and partner with the best globally. The IRO also plays a pivotal role in supporting the growth of the university's international hubs in Singapore, the USA, Ghana, and India, a key pillar of the Science for Humanity Strategy.

Prior to his current role, Michael served as the Senior International Relations Manager for Europe, working with the academic community to strengthen the university's relationships with European institutions and facilitating cross-border academic and research initiatives.

Previously, Michael held the position of Director at a leading international thinktank and policy network, where he played a key role in convening global leaders from government, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), academia, and industry. The thinktank focused on addressing complex, interconnected challenges across political economy, innovation, science and technology, as well as social and environmental policy. In this capacity, Michael led a team that convened heads of state, policymakers, business and industry leaders, and academic researchers to foster dialogue and cooperation on issues of critical global importance.

Michael has also worked at the University of Strathclyde, supporting the development of international strategic partnerships in science and technology.
