RESEARCH

I have a long-standing track record in the application of -omics technologies to cardiovascular disease. My group performs proteomics and non-coding RNA measurements in-house with key expertise in operating advanced mass spectrometry equipment and applying bioinformatics and machine learning tools for data integration (Joshi et al, Nat Rev Cardiol 2021).

1. Combining Proteomics with Lipidomics

Cardiovascular risk prediction has focused on the cholesterol content of high-density lipoproteins (HDL-C) and low-density lipoproteins (LDL-C). We have applied proteomics and lipidomics to atherosclerotic plaques and plasma samples. We complement lipidomics data with apolipoprotein measurements. This multi-omics approach enables the cross-validation of the lipidomics findings at the apolipoprotein level.

2. Analysis of the Extracellular Matrix Proteome in Disease States

We have established innovative proteomics workflows to identify new extracellular matrix proteins in heart and blood vessels that are induced in disease. Over the last few years, my group has contributed most proteomics entries for cardiovascular disease to the public data repository of the European Bioinformatics Institute.

3. Combining Protein with RNA Biomarkers.

Using proteomics, we identified cMyBP=C as novel biomarker: https://patents.google.com/patent/WO2010130985A1/en.
Besides proteomics, we have made seminal contributions to microRNA biomarker research. Based on my intellectual property, a ThrombomiRTM assay has been commercialised by TamiRNA (www.tamirna.com).
