BIO
Mario is an Imperial College Research Fellow in the Department of Economics & Public Policy at Imperial Business School, sponsored by Professor Dame Carol Propper. He is currently a Visiting Postdoctoral Scholar at Stanford University in the Department of Health Policy (Stanford School of Medicine) for the 2025-2026 academic year, hosted by Dr. Maya Rossin-Slater. He is an applied microeconomist with research interests in health, labor, and public economics.
His research focuses on three main areas: child development, human capital formation, and fertility and family. Specifically, his projects examine (i) the long-term effects of early-life shocks, (ii) environmental risks affecting young people's mental health and well-being, (iii) socioeconomic inequality in health and access to healthcare, and (iv) factors underlying declining fertility rates.
Before joining to Imperial, he earned his PhD in Health Policy (Economics) from Lancaster University, funded by the NIHR School for Public Health Research (SPHR). He holds a BSc in Economics from Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), a MSc in Health Economics from Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR), and a MRes in Applied Economics from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB).
His research is interdisciplinary and he has published in academic journals in various fields, such as the Economics and Human Biology, Social Science & Medicine, BMJ, BJGP, and Health Economics, Policy and Law, etc. His work has featured in popular media and relevant blogs, such as The Guardian, The Times, Diari Ara, Nada Es Gratis, etc.
He is affiliated with Centre for Health Economics and Policy Innovation (CHEPI — Imperial Business School) and with the Health Econometrics and Data Group (HEDG—University of York). He is a member of the Royal Economics Society, the European Labour Economic Society and the International, European and Spanish Health Economics Associations.
