BIO

Dr Lopes Pires is Teaching Fellow in the Faculty of Medicine. Her learning and teaching reflexions and her experience as a teacher in Brazil, have been recognised by the award of an Associate Fellowship of Higher Education (AFHEA) by the Higher Education Academy in 2020. She finalized her Postgraduate Teaching Certification (PGCert) and Diploma (PGDip). She is also a personal tutor of students, supporting them through their BMB course journey.

Research journey

Dr Lopes Pires is a cardiovascular pharmacologist who took part of Prof Jane Mitchell's and Dr Nicholas Kirkby's group at Vascular Biology section of the National Heart & Lung Institute. Her position was funded by British Heart Foundation Programme Grant. She worked with in vivo and ex vivo models of cardiovascular disease, seeking to understand the function of COX2 in the protection of cardiovascular system.

Dr Lopes Pires graduated in Biochemistry Pharmacy at UNESP (State University Julio de Mesquita Filho)- Brazil. In 2013, Dr Lopes Pires completed her PhD in Pharmacology at UNICAMP (State University of Campinas)- Brazil with Prof Sisi Marcondes, studying platelet reactivity and reactive oxygen species in sepsis condition (animal model). During this time, she did her doctoral internship at Université Jean Monnet- GIMAP- Pathophysiology and Prevention of infectious diseases- Santa Etienne-France, under supervision of Dr Fabrice Cognasse. She completed her first post-doctoral training under the guidance of Prof Jon Gibbins, at Reading University, where she worked with lipopolysaccharide effects in human platelet function. Before joining Imperial College, she worked at Anglia Ruskin University under the supervision of Dr Nick Pugh, completing a post-doctoral study about the function of zinc in human platelet reactivity.
