RESEARCH

Overview
Maria Getino has a background in Biotechnology and Molecular Biology. Her PhD work at the University of Cantabria focused on discovering new strategies to control bacterial conjugation with the aim of preventing transmission of antimicrobial resistance. In 2016, she moved to the University of Surrey, where she developed a novel epigenomics-based method to track plasmids in microbial communities and then studied the risk factors associated with antimicrobial resistance transmission between humans and animals across Europe. She is now involved in deciphering the complexities of antimicrobial resistance emergence, transmission and persistence in human priority pathogens, including the investigation of outbreaks in collaboration with UKHSA.
