Dr Mohammad Fattahi Mehraban is a Research Associate at Imperial College London, specialising in subsurface energy storage, electrochemical engineering, and fluid flow in porous media. His research bridges geoscience and electrochemistry, developing sustainable technologies that use geological formations as natural reactors or batteries for clean-energy applications.

He holds a PhD in Geoenergy Engineering from Heriot-Watt University, where he led multidisciplinary projects on low-salinity water injection, CO₂ storage, and carbonated water flooding, advancing understanding of interfacial phenomena and rock–fluid interactions. His expertise spans coreflooding, zeta-potential and streaming-potential measurements, SCAL/RCAL analysis, brine chemistry, analytical analysis such as mass spectroscopy (FT-ICR MS), and electrochemical systems.

At Imperial, Dr Fattahi Mehraban is pioneering the concept of Large-Scale Geological Flow Batteries (LS-GFBs), a transformative approach that uses natural geological formations to achieve long-duration, grid-scale electricity storage. His work combines laboratory experimentation with reservoir-scale modelling (IC-FERST) to design safe, low-cost, and long-duration energy storage systems that support the UK’s net-zero and energy-security goals.

Endorsed as a Global Talent by the Royal Academy of Engineering, Dr Fattahi Mehraban has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications, presented at leading international conferences, and received awards including the Adrian Todd Golden Key Fund . His vision is to lead a world-class research programme on subsurface energy technologies, advancing sustainable and scalable solutions for a decarbonised future.
