BIO

Martyn Boutelle leads the biomedical sensors research group. This group that embraces both the development of fundamental methods for measuring physical and chemical properties of tissue, and the use of these new techniques in a programme of neuroscience and clinical science research. The research group is highly multidisciplinary with past members from biomedical engineering, chemistry, physics, electrical engineering and clinical medicine.

Key relationships has been (1) The International Society for Monitoring Molecules in Neuroscience   (MMiN) where I have been past President. (2) involvement in the founding of COSBID an international organisation of clinicians and researchers to investigate the role of spreading depolarisation waves in human brain secondary injury. Its iCSD annual meetings have approx. 200 delegates.

Career: Martyn Boutelle trained at Imperial College gaining a PhD in electrochemistry with John Albery FRS in the Department of Chemistry. He then moved to Physiology at the University of Oxford where he worked with Marianne Fillenz and Allen Hill FRS in the interdisciplinary area of in vivo monitoring of the brain using electrochemical sensors. His work there led to an interest in brain metabolism, and monitoring extracellular neurochemistry with high time resolution by use of microelectrodes and on-line microdialysis. This was extended to clinical monitoring of the brain in 1995 when he moved to the Department of Chemistry, King's College where he was a Lecturer then Reader in Biomedical Analysis. He joined the Department of Bioengineering in Imperial College in December 2004 and was made a professor in 2011. He also holds an Imperial role of Associate Provost (estates planning) reporting to the Provost.
