BIO

Luís-Jorge Amaral is a researcher in infectious disease epidemiology with a focus on the transmission and control of onchocerciasis. His work combines stochastic individual-based models, spatial epidemiology, and programme data to evaluate elimination strategies such as ivermectin mass treatment and vector control. He collaborates with national programmes and international partners in West and Central Africa, translating modelling outputs into operational guidance. Recent projects include long-term projections for Togo using EPIONCHO-IBM, integration of entomological indicators into elimination assessments, and reproducible analysis pipelines for policy reporting. He is currently a PhD researcher at the Global Health Institute, Belgium, has worked with the UK Health Security Agency and holds a visiting affiliation in infectious disease modelling at Imperial College London.
