BIO
Kunal is an Out of Programme Research (OOPR) PhD candidate at the Institute of Global Health Innovation, Imperial College London, supervised by Professor Ara Darzi and Dr. Saira Ghafur. He is also a General Surgery Specialty Trainee (ST5) in North West London. His research sits at the intersection of healthcare cybersecurity and patient safety, with a focus on the downstream clinical impacts of cyberattacks on NHS and international health systems.
His PhD centres on iReACH, a simulation platform that uses NHS Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) data to model patient redistribution strategies during large-scale cyberattacks causing simultaneous hospital shutdowns. The work draws on network analysis and agent-based modelling to identify resilient care pathways under system disruption. Alongside his simulation work, Kunal leads empirical and qualitative research on cyberattack impacts in healthcare, including a mixed-methods analysis of the 2024 Synnovis ransomware attack on NHS London. He has published over 30 articles with manuscripts journals including npj Digital Medicine and The Lancet Digital Health.
Outside of academia, Kunal founded GenSurgInterviews.com, a platform supporting UK surgical training applicants preparing for ST3 general surgery interviews.
