DrKeir Philip

I am a Clinical Lecturer at the National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI), Imperial College London and an Honorary Consultant in Respiratory and General Medicine at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. My research focuses on the intersection of respiratory health, digital health technologies, and psychosocial outcomes such as social isolation and loneliness in people with chronic disease.

I read medicine at the University of Sheffield and completed an intercalated BSc in International Health at the University of Bristol. I went on to an NIHR Academic Foundation training post in North Central Thames and Core Medical Training in North East Thames. I then spent two years in sub-Saharan Africa doing a combination of clinical work in rural hospitals, and research on chronic respiratory disease. I returned to the UK and undertook an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship, completing my specialty training in Respiratory and General Medicine in North West London. I was awarded an 4i ICCS/MRC/Wellcome Clinical PhD Fellowship and completed my PhD at the NHLI investigating holistic approaches to digital health in respiratory disease.

I have led and contributed to studies supported by major UK funders and international collaborators, and have presented my work at leading international conferences (British Thoracic Society, European Respiratory Society). I have first and last author publications, including in high-impact journals including the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Lancet Respiratory Medicine and Lancet Regional Health Europe. I have given various public engagement presentations including a TEDx talk, and received national and international awards for my research. My research has been included in international reports (Asthma+Lung UK) and clinical guidelines (UpToDate). It has also been extensively covered in national and international media (BBC, Guardian, Nature Briefing, and BMJ). My goal is to produce research that is methodologically rigorous, clinically meaningful, and impactful for patients, clinicians, and health systems.

Other interests include dance, music and travel. Previously I worked as a dancer and dance teacher, working in the UK and internationally. I have performed in music videos and at major events including Glastonbury, international music tours (Europe and South Africa), and films. I have also been the celebrant for multiple weddings and play the flute.
