BIO

My current work is evaluating sepsis alerts across six hospital trusts. DiAlS (Digital Alerting in Sepsis) will investigate the impact of digital sepsis alerts on patient outcomes and staff activity in six NHS Hospital Trusts across England and Wales. The project includes both qualitative and quantitative approaches to assess the impact. I am leading on the quantitative analysis.

Based in the Global Digital Health Unit I work closely with Dr Ceire Costelloe the director of the GDHU. Under the supervision of Dr Costelloe we are applying robust methodologies to electronic health records to analyse a range of interventions as natural experiments.

At ICHT I work closely with Dr Anne Kinderlerer and I regularly attend the Sepsis Big Room at the Trust where I meet with frontline staff, analysts, pharmacists and managers.

I am an experienced statistician and support colleagues with systematic reviews, modelling approaches and R and Stata.

Priort to my current role I was based at the Dr Foster Unit where I worked with Professor Bottle on a project identifying the determinants of variations in both emergency readmission rates and one-year mortality in patients hospitalized with heart failure or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

The topic which has informed my research is the use of publicly available and/or routinely collected to data to inform health policy and practice in order to improve outcomes for patients. There is an abundance of data being collected and, sometimes, being made available to the public; the potential to use this data to improve outcomes is a key area of focus.

Prior to starting my PhD, my career was in education, where I became increasingly interested in the use of data to inform practice and policy. This led to me completing an MSc in Statistics at the University of Sheffield and subsequently a PhD in Health Services Research (at the University of Leicester). I analysed publicly available data to determine factors associated with practice mortality rates.
