Kent Buse directs the Healthier Societies Programme at The George Institute for Global Health and co-directs Global Health 50/50.
Kent is a political-economist whose work focuses on health policy analysis, particularly the role of power and politics in policy processes. He applies such analysis to a range of health issues, including HIV, sexual and reproductive health and rights, non-communicable diseases, migrant health, etc, mainly in low- and middle-income countries. He is interested in how best to include gender, equity and rights considerations in health policy. He is lead author of the key textbook in this field Making Health Policy.
Kent has been working on issues related to public-private health partnerships for almost three decades. For the past several years, he has been doing more work on the structural, social and commercial determinants of (ill)health—including on the politics of inter-sectoral coordination and governance—as part of his interest in a paradigmatic pivot to prevention and healthier societies approaches to health equity. He is interested in evidence-to-policy pathways, meaningful engagement in policy processes and governance and systems of accountability. He has also published on global health policy-making processes, architecture and governance.
Kent served for 12 years as senior advisor to the Executive Director and as Chief, Strategy, Research and Policy at UNAIDS. In that role he served as Sherpa to a range of global health initiatives and led development of corporate strategies as well as led UNAIDS participation in the United Nations General Assembly Political Declarations on HIV/AIDS. Kent taught at the Yale University School of Public Health and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He has worked for and/or advised organisations including UNICEF, WHO, Global Fund, GAVI, PMNCH, DFID as well as national governments. Kent holds a PhD (London) and an MSc (Econ) (London). Kent is Conjoint Professor, Faculty of Medicine, University of New South Wales. He serves on the Policy and Prevention Committee of the World Obesity Federation.
