DrKleopatra Alexiadou

Dr Kleopatra Alexiadou is a Consultant in Endocrinology, Diabetes, General Internal and Bariatric Medicine at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and Visiting Reader in the Department of Metabolism, Digestion and Reproduction at Imperial College London.

She trained in Medicine at the University of Athens Medical School, before gaining Membership of the Royal College of Physicians and completing her specialist training in Endocrinology and Diabetes and General Internal Medicine at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust in 2022. She was awarded her PhD from the University of Athens for work on the effects of incretin-based therapies on appetite-regulating gut hormones in type 2 diabetes.

Dr Alexiadou's research sits at the interface of gut hormone physiology, obesity and metabolic bariatric surgery. As a Postdoctoral Clinical Research Fellow and subsequently NIHR Clinical Lecturer at Imperial College London, she investigated the mechanisms underlying weight loss and metabolic improvement following bariatric surgery, with a particular focus on gut hormone secretion, glycaemic variability and postprandial metabolism. She has also developed a parallel research interest in obesity-related immunometabolism, investigating immune cell phenotype and function and in adipose tissue physiology; during her fellowship at the Francis Crick Institute, she extended this work to explore adipose tissue dysfunction, autophagy and inflammation in obesity, broadening her translational research toolkit into molecular and cell biology. Her current work centres on understanding the divergent outcomes seen after metabolic bariatric surgery, integrating clinical and registry data, eating behaviour assessment and genomics to build predictive models of individual patient response.

Alongside her research, she runs specialist clinics in obesity and lipid management and has a clinical interest in the use of GLP-1 receptor agonist therapies and their comparison with metabolic bariatric surgery in the management of obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Dr Alexiadou has published widely in the fields of obesity, bariatric surgery and gut hormone physiology and has presented her work at national and international conferences, including invited talks and awards for Best Poster and Oral Presentation at the Society for Endocrinology's Obesity Update Conference (2019, 2020, 2025).

She serves as a reviewer for journals including Nature Medicine, Nature Medicine Communications, Diabetes Care, Obesity and Clinical Endocrinology, contributing approximately 8-10 manuscript reviews per year and is a member of Diabetes UK, the British Society for Endocrinology, the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, the European Society of Endocrinology, the World Obesity Federation and the Endocrine Society.
