BIO
Julian Smart is a PhD candidate at the Centre for Environmental Policy (CEP), Imperial College, where he studies the de-risking of carbon dioxide removal technologies under the supervision of Professor Niall Mac Dowell. His work is funded by the Natural Environmental Research Council (NERC) SSCP DTP part of the United Kingdom Research and Innovation (UKRI). He has been involved in research for the past three years and has published various papers across multiple disciplines including work featured in the Financial Times. He is also a teaching assistant at the Imperial College Business School.
He has an MSc in Finance and Accounting from Imperial College London and a BSc in Accounting and Finance from the University of Bath. He graduated on the Dean's List at Imperial and top of the School of Management at the University of Bath (1/444). Other notable achievements include being a recipient of the Dean's Award for Sustainable Business Thinking and the RSM Award for graduating top of the 2021 Accounting and Finance class at the University of Bath.
His current PhD research has been featured in the Sargent Centre Industrial Symposium 2024 and the Grantham Institute Research Showcase 2025 in collaboration with CO2RE.
