BIO
My research focuses on developing numerical methods for simulations of fluid flow. I am particularly interested in methods for improving the efficiency and speed of these simulations, and developing practical implementations in high performance software.
I am a research associate in the Mathematics of Planet Earth group, where I am investigating parallel-in-time methods for atmospheric models, with applications in weather prediction and climate modelling. These methods can enable higher resolution (and therefore more accurate) simulations by leveraging the massive parallelism of modern supercomputers.
My work includes development of these algorithms as well as demonstrating their capability for real parallel speedup using software developed with Firedrake, an automated code-generation framework for finite element simulations (github.com/firedrakeproject/firedrake).
With Professor Colin Cotter, I have been investigating the ParaDiag-II class of parallel-in-time methods. I am the lead developer of the asQ software library (github.com/firedrakeproject/asQ) implementing these methods. This project has been funded by the UK Met Office through the APinTA ExCALIBUR project.
With Professor David Ham and Professor Jemima Tabeart (TU Eindhoven), I am working on parallel-in-time methods for data assimilation, which is the class of methods for using real-world observational data to improve the accuracy of weather forecasts.
This project is funded through the SysGenX ExCALIBUR project.
Previously, I completed my DPhil at the Oxford Thermofluids Institute in the Department of Engineering Science at the University of Oxford, sponsored by Rolls Royce plc. I investigated the behaviour of finite volume and finite difference numerical methods for low Mach number flow, as well as looking at the effect that thermal boundary conditions have on turbulent heat transfer predictions in high resolution fluid simulations.
