DrJoshua Cuddihy

Joshua Cuddihy, MBBS, PhD, BSc, FRCA, is a medical doctor specialising in anaesthesia and critical care medicine with a particular interest in burns critical care. He is an honorary clinical lecturer at Imperial College London, in the department of Surgery and Cancer. He is currently a specialist training registrar in London.

His research and clinical interest in burn care, and association with Chelsea and Westminster Hospital started in 2007, where he worked as a physiotherapist on the burns unit, having completed his undergraduate training in Physiotherapy at Brunel University between 2002 and 2005. He completed his medical training at King's College London between 2009-2013, and after 4 years of medical training and anaesthesia training, returned to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in 2017. Here, he was appointed as the Burns Research Fellow, and completed his PhD alongside clinical work as a senior clinical fellow in intensive care over the next 5 years. As part of this role, he was a local lead in the recruitment of critically injured burns patients to the Re-Energize study, an international, double blinded RCT investigating the role of glutamine supplementation to reduce mortality and adverse outcomes. Since 2021, he has been in formal specialist training in Anaesthesia and Critical care in London, alongside his ongoing academic work as an Honorary Fellow at Imperial.

His academic area of interest includes the mass spectrometry imaging analysis of burned skin, the role of fire related burn injury on human evolution, and the impact of major burn injury on mortality and morbidity in critical care. He has collaborated on crititcal care and anaesthesia research in difficult airway management, PVL staphylococcus bacteraemia and covid-19.

He continues to collaborate and publish work related to burn injury and management, and has presented his work in international meetings in Serbia, the United States and Portugal, as well as within the United Kingdom. He teaches clinical and research topics in burns care to undergraduate medical students and post graduate doctors.
