BIO
I am the Professor of Chemical Systems Pathology in the National Heart and Lung Institute.
My research focus is in understanding the gene regulation of macrophages in atherosclerosis and translating that understanding to meaningful clinical change in diagnostics and therapeutics.
This includes a key chemistry collaboration. That requires an excellent understanding of chemistry, active work on systems biology of macrophage gene regulation, and extremely strong understanding of pharmacology and of the pathological basis of disease.
I was raised in Glasgow Scotland. I am medically qualified (MBChB with Hons, Glasgow 1991, which means joint second in the year). However, my first degree was in Pharmacology (Class I Hons, 1988, plus Prizes) from the University of Glasgow, which comes with first-rate grounding in chemistry, and integration with world-leading investigators in autonomic and vascular pharmacology. I then did PhD in vascular molecular cell biology at Cambridge and then moved to Imperial College London. I am also a fully trained histopathologist (FRCPath) and practised at consultant level for 15 years.
We work on protective gene regulation and its detection and measurement. Pathology informs the research questions chosen that are examined using modern biochemistry methods, including -omics, systems biology, novel chemical probes and imaging, The modern era of spatial transcriptomics and multiplex immunostaining is incredibly exciting.
