BIO

Jared Gichohi Maina, PhD, is a statistical geneticist and genomic researcher using large-scale genomic and health datasets to investigate the biological and environmental determinants of complex human traits and diseases. His work combines statistical genetics, epidemiology and data science, with expertise in GWAS and post-GWAS analyses, polygenic scoring, Mendelian randomisation, genetic correlation and large-scale genomic data analysis.

He has worked across multi-site and population health studies, with a particular interest in improving the representation of globally diverse and historically underrepresented populations in genomics research such as in the Depression Genetics in Africa (DepGenAfrica) project. His research aims to translate human genetic data into insights that improve the understanding, prediction and treatment of disease while contributing to more equitable health outcomes.

Jared is also passionate about public engagement and improving access to genetics education. He is the founder of Genes Zetu, a science communication initiative on Instagram and TikTok that makes genetics and genomics more accessible to Swahili-speaking audiences through culturally and linguistically relevant educational content.
