MrJacob Francis

I am a Mathematics PhD, based in the department and part of Grantham Institute's 'Sciences and Solutions for a Changing Planet' DTP funded by NERC. My research is on developing and integrating optimal transport (OT) and forecast verification methods to form a novel flow map metric to improve verification of models. Simultaneously, I am investigating OT as a spatially informed loss function for AI weather prediction. I am supervised my Professor Colin Cotter of Imperial College London and Dr Marion Mittermaier of the MET Office UK, with collaborations with Professor Jean-David Benamou (INRIA, Paris) and Professor Gregor Skok (University of Ljubljana).

I completed my Mathematics MSci here at Imperial. My masters thesis looked at developing a novel tool to solve the shallow-water semi-geostrophic equations via optimal transport, under the supervision of Colin Cotter.
