BIO

Dr Jack Haywood is a Public Health Physician with an interest in medical education. He is currently a Principal Clinical Teaching Fellow in the Educational Partnerships office of the Faculty of Medicine. His role focuses on curriculum development, with Jack leading work on social accountable medical education, curriculum design including assessment, and admissions.

Jack completed his medical training at King's College London in 2016 (MBBS), having undertaken an intercalated BSc in Management at Imperial College London. He completed a PGCert in Health and Medical Education during his Academic Foundation Training in medical education. In 2021, he completed a MSc in Global Health Policy at the London School of Hygiene of Tropical Medicine.

Jack was National Medical Director's Clinical Fellow at Health Education England, and more latterly NHS England Workforce, Training, and Education. Here he led complex projects focusing on undergraduate and postgraduate medical education reform. He had a central role in the development of a new postgraduate training programme in public health and general practice, developed training guidelines for doctors in virtual ward learning environments, and developed recommendations for recruitment into and curricula at rural and coastal medical schools to promote workforce retention, amongst many other projects. 

Jack commenced Public Health specialty training in 2021. He has had roles in local government, regional health protection, and in global health. He has a particular interest in health systems strengthening, focusing on public health and healthcare workforce strengthening. He worked with the World Health Organization on the development of a public health and emergency workforce competency framework to allow the implementation of the Essential Public Health Functions in member states. He has also had a technical advisory role in Malawi and the Philippines in strengthening the health workforce and infrastructure. He is currently working at the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO), focusing on the UK's position in global health institutions, such as Gavi The Vaccine Alliance, and on our work in fragile and conflicted affected situations (FCAS).

Jack holds Membership of the Faculty of Public Health (MFPH), Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Educators (FAcadMEd), and Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).
