MrJuan Carlos Rivillas-Garcia

Dr Juan-Carlos Rivillas is a Teaching Fellow in Machine Learning, Health Economics and Global Diseases at Imperial's School of Public Health.

He joined to Imperial College in 2020 as a PhD student in Clinical Medicine Research in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the MRC Environment and Health (Molecular Signature and Disease Pathways Group). His research interests lie in the field of longevity, internal exposome, early-life exposoures, biological aging, molecular epidemiology, machine learning methods, and health financing. He is interested in developing biological clocks (aging biomarkers, proteomics and ovarian clocks) using clinical biomarkers and omic technologies and investigating biological pathways of chronic diseases across the life course. (CDV, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, cancer, dementia) and age acceleration. As co-investigatir, he is using multi-omics approaches (including metagenomics and nutrigenomics) to investigate how ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption relates to gut microbiome composition and microRNA (miRNA) signatures among different diteary groups (Omnivorous, vegans, and vegetarians).

He leads a working group in exposome in Colombia (Collaboration Imperial College-University CES) and in 2024 established TransAtlantic research network to investigate age acceleration in South American countries. He is committed to support the career development of younger women's researchers in the field (providing training processing, statistical analysis, model accuracy, data visualisation skills, understanding regression models, and learning to apply them to real-world problems).

He is part of the editorial advisory board of the Journal of Migration and Health and review editor on the editorial board of Environmental Pollution.

Juan-Carlos has an academic background is a MSc. in Health Economics and Policy (Italy) and a BSc in Health Services Management (Colombia). He has been previusly involved in the Turin Longitudinal Study (Italy), the University of Lausanne (Switzerland), The Lifelines (The Netherlands) and the International Development Research Centre IDRC (Canada), where he contributed to data analytics in health financing, inequality, and health systems.
