Jeff is recognized for pedagogical excellence at every level of higher education. At the undergraduate level, he taught both strategy and entrepreneurship and was awarded the Sauvain award for lifetime achievement in undergraduate education. At the MBA level, he was repeatedly nominated for Indiana University’s Trustees' Teaching Award and won it twice. At the doctoral level, he won the Faculty Distinguished Teaching Award. Additionally, Jeff won innovative teaching awards from the Kelley School of Business and the AOM’s Entrepreneurship Division for designing curricula on social entrepreneurship and design thinking, before either topic had established teaching content. In terms of curriculum, Jeff has designed residential courses in social and sustainable entrepreneurship and created a joint program between Kelley and the O’Neil School in social entrepreneurship. He has also created and taught online courses in strategic entrepreneurship and new venture concepts. Finally, at the doctoral level, Dr. McMullen has created and taught seminars in theory development, entrepreneurship, strategic management, and behavioral research methods.

In addition to his research and teaching accomplishments, Jeff has been repeatedly recognized for his mentorship and service to the profession and community, as well as by previous universities where he was on faculty – Indiana University (2008-2025) and Baylor University (2003-2008).

In 2023, he received the Academy of Management (AOM) Entrepreneurship Division’s Dedication to Entrepreneurship award, for outstanding contributions to the field, and was nominated for a Distinguished Chair at Indiana University. In 2022, he won the AOM Entrepreneurship Division’s mentor award, receiving over 20 letters of support from former doctoral students and junior faculty whom he has mentored. In 2018 and 2019, he won the Faculty Distinguished Teaching Award and the Faculty Inspiration Guidance Award, respectively, from the doctoral students at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, and in 2019, his doctoral student, Alexander S. Kier, won the emerging scholar award of the AOM’s Entrepreneurship Division for his dissertation work, conducted under Dr. McMullen’s supervision.

Jeff is a regular speaker at all the Academy of Management consortiums and has chaired its doctoral consortium. He chaired or served on multiple committees at Indiana University, including the school-wide Formal Review Committee for Promotion and Tenure, and regularly recruited for the Management & Entrepreneurship Department.
