BIO
James McCloskey is a Senior Teaching Fellow and Lead Consultant in Global Skills Development at Imperial Business School. He leads the School’s skills-development curriculum across undergraduate, MSc and MBA programmes, delivering training that builds students’ ability to communicate effectively, work productively in teams and perform confidently in high-pressure academic and professional settings.
James specialises in practical, applied support: presentation coaching, team diagnostics, conflict resolution, analytical writing, and communication for consultancy and project-based modules. He works closely with Capstone, entrepreneurship and group-project teams, helping them refine arguments, structure complex information and communicate persuasively to academic and professional audiences.
He also contributes to curriculum design and strategic planning in Global Skills. This includes integrating communication and teamwork competencies into degree pathways, developing diagnostic surveys for team functioning, and creating learning resources that support independent skill-building. His practice is grounded in long experience working with international cohorts and in tools such as MBTI and Cultural Intelligence (CQ).
Before joining Imperial, James led academic support provisions at Royal Holloway, University of London, and previously taught at Chiba University and Waseda University in Japan. His earlier roles included academic and managerial roles at the British Council in Japan and Bulgaria. He holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics from Birkbeck, University of London.
