ProfessorJon Marangos

Jon Marangos obtained his PhD from Imperial College in 1986. In 1990 he was appointed an EPSRC Advanced Fellow during which time he was a Visiting Researcher at NIST, Gaithersburg USA working on high resolution spectroscopy and a Visiting Professor at the University of Tokyo applying VUV sources to muon science. He was appointed a Lecturer in Physics at Imperial in 1995, Reader in 1999 and was made Professor of Laser Physics in 2002 and subsequently appointed to the Lockyer Chair in Physics. He was the Director of the Blackett Laboratory Extreme Light Consortium from 2002 to 2025 and served as the Head of the Quantum Optics and Laser Science Group from 2003-2008.

His major areas of research activity are in: (1) development of experimental methods for the measurement of processes on the attosecond time-scales; (2) non-linear optical processes for generation of coherent soft X-ray and VUV radiation and applications of these sources in atomic, molecular, condensed phase and muon physics; (3) linear and linear X-ray non-linear optics and attosecond pump-probe research with XFELS. He is involved in free electron laser science and policy having led the UK New Light Source Project from 2008-2010 and been Science Lead to the UK XFEL project from 2019 – present and is the UK representative on the European XFEL Council. He is a Fellow of Optica and the Institute of Physics.
