RESEARCH
Alejandro's research asks how the ways we classify and come to know the living world shape what environmental policy is able to see, value, and act on, and how art-led and more-than-human approaches can widen the knowledge base of environmental decision-making. His work bridges science and technology policy, ecological thinking, and artistic research.
His current research interests include:
Classification and environmental governance: how the categories through which policy sorts the world (resource and waste, stakeholder and externality, nature and culture) function as decisions that determine what governance can recognise and regulate.
More-than-human policy and value: how environmental decision-making might account for the agency and interests of non-human beings, and for frameworks of value that reach beyond narrowly economic terms.
Knowledge, innovation and research systems: how research and innovation systems produce, fund, and mobilise knowledge, building on work on serendipity in research and the direction of science and technology policy.
Art-led research for environmental policy: treating artistic and visual practice as a rigorous source of knowledge that surfaces embodied, emergent, and contested dimensions of ecological problems, dimensions that top-down analysis tends to leave out.
Sustainability transitions and the circular economy: how sectors such as fashion and textiles move beyond sustainability toward regenerative and repair-oriented systems, and what policy enables or blocks that shift.
Beyond sustainability, regeneration and recovery: policy and design approaches aimed not at reducing harm but at enabling ecological and biodiversity recovery.
Interdisciplinary environmental education: how art, science, and policy intersect in higher education, and how embodied and narrative methods can transform sustainability learning.
