DrJulie Kalmoni

Dr. Julie Jalila Kalmoni is a Teaching Fellow in Inorganic Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry at Imperial College London. She is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, in recognition of her effective practice in supporting and teaching within higher education. Julie has a particular interest in Practical Chemistry, enabling students to develop and enhance their practical skills through varying levels of inquiry. 

Julie completed her Chemistry MSci degree and PhD at University College London (UCL). She was part of the first cohort to pursue the Air Pollution Project, in which she and her colleagues worked with primary school children to measure the levels of NOx around London using diffusion tubes fabricated in the teaching labs. As a result of their work, they were all awarded with the Provost Teaching Award for outstanding contribution to student education. At the end of Julie's MSci degree, she was awarded the Gillespie Prize, which is awarded annually to the best UCL graduate progressing to a doctoral research degree in Inorganic Chemistry.

Her PhD research focused on the fabrication of fluorine-free superhydrophobic (highly water repellent) materials and the modification of these materials with metal oxides by vapour phase deposition techniques to introduce additional functionality. Julie was awarded the "Best Poster Award" at the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Surface Coatings Conference for having the best presentation and design. She also co-developed an MSci project and co-supervised several MSci students. 

During her PhD, Julie worked as a postgraduate teaching assistant in both Chemistry and Engineering, but found herself spending most of her time in the research and undergraduate labs. Julie supported the Lab_14 project, which gave students a lab experience at home, which was subsequently awarded the Horizon Prize by the RSC.

Julie was selected to attend the "Broadening Horizons in the Chemical Sciences" scheme run by the RSC. It is a competitive pilot initiative encouraging individual from minority groups to pursue careers in the chemical sciences. Julie enjoys taking part in outreach activities, as they give students the opportunity to learn, develop and excel in science! She also teaches on the Astrophoria Foundation Year Programme in Chemistry, Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Oxford. Julie is also a member of the Oxford Advanced Materials Network.

In her previous role, Julie worked as a Departmental Lecturer in Practical Chemistry at the University of Oxford, where she assessed, taught and co-developed practicals for the 2^nd and 3^rd year MChem undergraduates. 

In her spare time, Julie enjoys walking, travelling and chocolate making!
