DrJo Horsburgh

Jo is a Principal Lecturer in Medical Education and is Deputy Head of the Educational Development Unit, based within the Centre for Higher Education Research and Scholarship (CHERS). She runs several faculty development workshops aimed at those who teach Imperial College Medical Students and teaches and supervises on the MEd in University Learning and Teaching. She also supervises PhD students and previously acted as Director of Postgraduate Studies for CHERS (2018-2024).

Jo is also Deupty Director of the Medical Education Innovation and Research Centre (MEdIC) based within the School of Public Health, and leads work related to faculty development, professional identity development, and supporting those new to medical education research. Jo provides educational expertise for a range of consultancy projects with several national and international partners.

In June 2024, Jo was awarded a President’s Medal for Teaching Innovation.

Prior to joining Imperial College, Jo worked as an Educationalist at the Royal College of Physicians, leading education courses for doctors both in the UK and overseas. Previously, Jo worked in the further education sector where she acted as both a head of department and a head of year.

Jo has a background in psychology and education, a MEd in Educational Leadership and completed her doctoral studies in medical education at King’s College London. Her doctoral work focused on the professional identity development of clinical educators who had completed Masters in Education. She is also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and an experienced, accredited coach.

Her research focuses on the professional identity development of medical educators, issues of equity and inclusion within higher education, learning from role models, and social accountability.
