DrJohn Cattermull

John Cattermull, DPhil is an Imperial Research Fellow in the Department of Materials. John obtained his MChem from the University of Oxford in 2020, followed by a DPhil (2024) in Materials Chemistry at Oxford. John carried out postdoctoral studies at Stanford University where he held a Lindemann Fellowship, before returning to his native UK to join Imperial.

As a solid-state materials chemist, John is interested in materials where complex structure drives their functionality, specifically in the context of ion transport. His research explores how structural disorder, crystallographic distortions, and framework flexibility influence the electrochemistry of materials. While fundamental in approach, these relate to applications such as batteries, and neuromorphic computing.

At every stage of his academic career, John has been reconised through independent fellowships and scholarships from Imperial, the Lindemann Trust,  St. Catherine's College - Oxford, the Lord Kitchener National Memorial Fund, and New College - Oxford.
