BIO
Hilary is the Director of Research Communication and a Principal Teaching Fellow at Imperial's Centre for Academic English. She is an established expert in the field of STEMM research communication and author of the book Science Research Writing and consults on scientific research publication at the highest level in all areas of STEMM, working with researchers to communicate complex content effectively across a range of fast-changing communication platforms.
Hilary is frequently invited to create and deliver workshops and guest lectures on writing for successful journal publication (often including editorial consultations) at universities and research institutions around the world. These include the University of Vigo, the University of Bayreuth, ITT Germany, the Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica (ITQB-NOVA) in Portugal, Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University (India), Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil (LNEC) in Portugal, the University of Campinas (Brazil), the University of Athens, the Royal College of Surgeons (Dublin), the Nacional de Educacion a Distanca in Madrid, and a public lecture at the University of Shanghai.
The first edition of Hilary's book Science Research Writing (2nd Edition, 2020; Google Scholar citation count >350) sold over a thousand copies in the first two months. The book has now sold over 60,000 copies, has been translated into Korean, Japanese and Chinese and has been used as a course book at more than 40 universities around the world.
She has been at Imperial since 1993, and worked closely with senior academics and REF leads at the Faculty of Engineering to prepare for their highly successful performance in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework. At Imperial, Hilary co-designed the award-winning Doctoral Thesis Writing Retreat and develops and delivers tailored workshops for individual research groups. She has worked with Imperial's Policy Fellows to support their writing of policy documents and in 2020, as a result of extensive collaboration with high-profile Imperial academics to draft and edit publications, she was invited to chair one of Imperial's Science Breaks Series, which showcases the impact and relevance of Imperial's research.
