BIO
Giovanni Milandri’s work focuses on product development and applied research in orthopaedics and rehabilitation, including prosthetics, surgical tools, and rehabilitation/assistive devices. His particular interest is in the systems-level interactions between technical design and the user requirements of the medical device.
His main area of expertise is in technical design, quality/regulatory and clinical trialling medical devices to survive translation from the lab to the clinic, and ensuring there is a sustainable business model. He has been part of 4 start-up companies, managed a governmental medical devices accelerator, and several frugal innovation projects. He holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering (U. Cape Town) and MSc degrees in Biomedical (U. Oxford) and Mechanical (U. Stellenbosch) Engineering.
Most recently he was QARA manager in MedTechONE focuses on translation of medical technologies across Imperial College London. This supports projects in developing a regulatory strategy and implementing an ISO13485 QMS.
Previously, he was technical project manager and senior engineer for a €5.2m project for the Italian Worker’s Compensation (INAIL), which provides prosthetics for 80% of Italian amputees. The project developed a new robotic knee and ankle prosthetic, giving patients assistive propulsion for more demanding daily tasks.
