Fengjie is a Principal Investigator (NERC IRF) at Grantham Institute and Department of Life Sciences. Research focuses on the impacts of human activities (e.g., environmental pollution, climate change) on ecosystem functioning and environmental health, and particularly interested in the development and application of novel technologies and an interdisciplinary approach including Physics, Chemistry and Biology to solve questions in these areas. His research is funded by Natural Environment Research Council, the Royal Society and European Commission.

Current projects focus on toxicity, limitation and nutrition of metals in marine and freshwater ecosystems, with implications in the important contemporary issues of Climate, Ocean and Environments. For example, the impacts of metals on the carbon/nitrogen cycling in oceans, the potential adverse effects of deep-sea mining on the health of marine organisms and their ecological functioning, environmental risks from the “cocktail” of toxic substances in the aquatic environment, and the unknown role of metals in favouring the development of antimicrobial resistance.
