BIO
Filippos Filippidis is an Associate Professor in Public Health at the School of Public Health and the School's Director of Education.
He has studied Medicine at the University of Athens, in Greece, and has earned an MPH from Harvard School of Public Health, with a focus on Quantitative Methods. He has also pursued a Master’s degree in Health Promotion and Education and a PhD at the University of Athens. His doctoral thesis explored the effects of the Greek economic crisis in the epidemiology of risk factors, such as obesity, smoking, diet and physical activity.
He is currently the Chair of the Tobacco Control Committee of the European Respiratory Society. He has served for one year as the deputy delegate of Greece at the Health Committee of OECD.
His current research is focused on the epidemiology of tobacco use, including emerging tobacco and nicotine products, and the evaluation of tobacco control policies in Europe, as well as in Low- and Middle-Income Countries. Examples include studies examining the impact of tobacco taxation and smoke-free legislation on tobacco consumption and health outcomes, especially related to child health. He is also interested in exploring and preventing industry interference in public health policies. His research interests also include social and economic determinants of health, health services and health-related behaviours. He has published more than 150 articles in peer-reviewed journals.
He has a strong interest in education and has designed and taught in undergraduate and postgraduate courses, face-to-face and online, across multiple programmes and institutions. He holds a PG Diploma in University Learning and Teaching from Imperial and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in the UK. Within the School of Public Health he has served as Course Organiser and Course co-Director of the Master of Public Health and, since 2021, he is the Director of Education for the whole School of Public Health at Imperial College London.
