BIO

RESEARCH INTERESTS
My research interests go from structural to functional material associated with some research on natural material and bioinspiration. All of these are gathered around two main cores, ceramic materials and processing. Ceramic are at the centre of today's and future high-end engineering products due to their resistance to extreme environments and their functional properties, with application ranging from turbine blades in engines, bone replacement and batteries. I am choosing to focus my research on processing because controlling a material structure across multiple length scales can break us free from some of the limitations encoded in materials at the atomic scale.

More specifically, I worked with and developed several processes based on colloids, solidification, magnetic field, pressure-assisted densification, and additive manufacturing. These processes are all based on ceramic powder and allow us to shape the material microstructure in various ways. Additionally, to get insight into what is possible to achieve by changing a material structure, we look into natural materials (bone, wood, seashells etc...) and to try replicate their design. To support this developments, I worked on different types of modelling tools (FEM, DEM) and images analysis on 3D structure (tomography data acquisition and treatment).

BIO
I joined the Department of Materials and the Centre for Advanced Structural Ceramics as lecturer in October 2018. Before that, I obtained my Master's degree in Material Sciences at the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Lyon (INSA de Lyon, France) in 2010. Then, I moved to the South of France for a PhD between three partners: the company Saint-Gobain, the Laboratory of Synthesis and Functionalization of Ceramics and the MATEIS laboratory (INSA de Lyon). In 2014, I worked as a postdoctoral researcher, then as a scientist in 2016, in the Complex Materials group of Prof. André R. Studart at the Department of Materials at the ETH Zürich.

Overview
I have been the happy recipient of an ERC Starting grant which started in March 2021. The goal of this research is to find a composition-independent solution to material brittleness. We will look at introducing interlocking toughening mechanisms in materials of any compositions using two different strategies: programming the structure at the microscale of layered materials with digital light printing technique and finding deformable strain-hardening material at the nanoscale. These endeavours are supported by in situ optical imaging and modelling to quantify and understand the potency of the mechanisms. This project is adding 2 PhD students and 1 Postdoc to the group, stay tuned for more information on how we will get to this goal!
