BIO

Frank Berkshire was latterly Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Mathematics during 1987-2011, when he then was formally retired. Post-retirement he is currently Principal Teaching Fellow in Dynamics

During that period he was responsible for the content and conduct of the degree courses. Among external roles he acted as consultant for the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority on Secondary level assessments - most recently through Chairing the 5-Year Review of Standards over Time for GCSE/AS/A Level Mathematics (2005).

He has delivered mathematics lectures, both theoretical and practical, in the UK and overseas, to a wide range of groups - specialised and non-specialised and of all ages.

His long term research interests include: fluid mechanics; waves in fluids with applications to oceanic and atmospheric flows; nonlinear partial differential equations, wave focusing and solitons; dynamics; sporting and biological mechanics; statistical aspects of dynamical systems; game theory; gambling; dice; billiards and chaos. With Professor Tom Kibble he is author of Classical Mechanics (5th Edition 2004 Imperial College/World Scientific). With Associate Professor Simon Malham ((Heriot-Watt) and Professor Trevor Stuart he is author of Introductory Incompressible Fluid Mechanics (2022 Cambridge University Press).
He was elected an Imperial College teaching Fellow in 1996.

In 2010 he was awarded the Rector's medal for Outstanding Contribution to Teaching Excellence.

He was a long time Board Director (and for a period Chairman) of the Blackheath Cricket, Football and Lawn Tennis Company Limited - which operates the Blackheath Sports Club.
