MsEmma Carrington

Dr Emma V Carrington is a clinician scientist and colorectal surgeon within the Department of Surgery and Cancer at Imperial College and the Department of Colorectal Surgery at Imperial College NHS Trust.

Academically she leads the Neurological Pelvic Organ Physiology (NPOP) Research Group where her research team focusses on refining the understanding of faecal continence physiology, optimising treatments for faecal incontinence and improving techniques for describing anorectal function.

Clinically, Dr Carrington specialises in pelvic floor disorders, lower gastrointestinal motility and inflammatory bowel disease. She co-leads the Imperial Clinical NPOP service which provides comprehensive care for patients with complex bowel, bladder and sexual organ dysfunction.

Her professional journey began with undergraduate studies at Imperial College in 1998 and she was awarded a First Class BSc in 2002 and MBBS in 2004. She went on to obtain an MSc in Surgical Technology, also from Imperial, in 2007 during her training in general surgery in London as an NIHR funded Clinical Lecturer. Her PhD, at Queen Mary, University of London focussed on anorectal physiology and was supported by a research fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons. Her post-doctoral work culminated in the publication of the transformative International Anorectal Physiology Working Group London Classification in 2019.

Following completion of her surgical training she was awarded competitive clinical fellowships from the European Society of Coloproctology (ESCP) and the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland (ACPGBI) to advance her knowledge in the managment of pelvic floor conditions. She then returned home to commence her current role at her alma mater as an Associate Professor in 2021.

Dr Carrington is widely published in the field of neurogastroenterology and has served on a number of international guideline and consensus committees (the anorectal section of the Rome V committee, the clinical assessment section of the International Consultation on Incontinence, the UEG guideline for diagnosis and treatment of faecal incontinence). She is the current European Society of Coloproctology representative to the United European Gastroenterology Scientific Committee, the research and development chair of The Pelvic Floor Society and the newly appointed co-chair of the bowel dysfunction committee for the International Continence Society.
