DrEdward Mullins

I am a Clinical Associate Professor at Imperial College, London and the George Institute for Global Health and Honorary Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

My research aims to make best use of the data and blood samples collected as part of routine maternity care. With fantastic colleagues, I have been awarded funding from the NIHR, charities and philanthropic organisations.

My PhD at Imperial College investigated the underlying of causes of Fetal Growth Restriction, a leading cause of pre-term birth and stillbirth.

Following this, I won a fellowship with Professor Dame Sally Davies, England CMO, as editor-in-chief of the CMO’s annual report, ‘Women: the health of the 51%.’ With Dame Sally, I worked with leaders in the field to bring a host improvements for women's health into policy and practice in the UK.

As an National Institute of Health Research Academic Clinical Lecturer, I investigated self-monitoring of maternal cardiovascular health and prevention of Gestational Diabetes.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I was seconded as clinical adviser to Professor Sir Chris Whitty, England CMO, and produced rapid evidence reviews on coronavirus infection in pregnancy and in children, which I presented to SAGE and formed the basis of clinical guidelines for the UK. I am an advisor to the WHO on maternal and perinatal research in pandemics.

I lead a new clinical service to provide post-birth contraception for all women in NW London to enable access to reliable family planning before discharge from maternity services. I am working with colleagues to evaluate this and support national roll-out.

With strong engagement with those who use our services, I am leading a new infection and immunity surveillance platform for London which uses routine maternity serum samples to assess maternal vaccination and immunity, evaluate new biomarkers for maternal disease and find out how many women enter pregnancy with undiagnosed conditions. I used these samples to track the onset of community transmission of COVID and we will establish their use in pandemic preparedness for the future.

I am developing a pilot National Maternity Database using the England Maternity Services Dataset and will evaluate this as a driver for maternity safety, service improvement and to deliver observational research and RCTs.
