Our research sits at the interface of chemistry, biology and medicine. We develop chemical biology and chemical proteomics approaches to understand, quantify and manipulate biological systems, with a particular focus on mechanisms relevant to cancer, infectious disease and drug discovery. Current work spans protein lipidation, targeted protein degradation, molecular glues, activity-based profiling, covalent ligand discovery, chemical genetics, medicinal chemistry, and the chemical synthesis and modification of proteins and peptides.
Professor Ed Tate is GSK Chair in Chemical Biology in the Department of Chemistry at Imperial College London and a Satellite Group Leader at the Francis Crick Institute. His group has pioneered chemical proteomic technologies to interrogate post-translational modifications and enable new therapeutic strategies, leading to major academic, translational and industrial impact. He is Director of the Imperial Centre for Drug Discovery Science and academic founder of Myricx Bio and Siftr Bio.
Ed trained in chemistry at Durham and Cambridge, followed by postdoctoral research in Paris and at Imperial spanning radical chemistry, molecular microbiology, protein chemistry and chemical biology. He was awarded a BBSRC David Phillips Research Fellowship in 2006, became Professor of Chemical Biology in 2014, and was appointed to the GSK Chair in Chemical Biology in 2023. His work has been recognised by major awards spanning chemical biology, translation and interdisciplinary science, including the RSC Norman Heatley Award, Sir David Cooksey Translation Prize, RSC Corday-Morgan Prize, RSC Horizon Prize, RSC Interdisciplinary Prize, Imperial Academic Entrepreneur of the Year, and the Klaus Grohe Prize of the GDCh.
